Moldova
Situation Report
Moldova is a densely populated urban country and a former member of the Soviet Union. According to the United Nations, Moldova is the poorest country in Eastern Europe. Though Moldova recently established a centralized health system, the program is in its infancy and faces serious shortages of medical supplies, medicines and medical equipment. Like other former Soviet republics, Moldova faces higher rates of death and injury in road traffic accidents. Trauma sustained during a crash is responsible for 18% of deaths and 20% of injuries in the former Soviet Union.
Our Work
We have shipped $10 million in humanitarian aid, medical equipment and supplies to Moldova since 1996. Our volunteers have rebuilt rundown hospitals and clinics, provided medical services and trained Moldovan medical professionals.
Future Plans
Our primary objective is to expand our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Train the Trainers program in the Transnistria (eastern) region of the country. We have previously established 6 emergency training centers and will expand our reach this year. Partnering with the Ministry of Health Commission for Emergency Situations, we will conduct disaster preparedness trainings and provide supplies for potential disasters.
Medical Teams International will send 5 volunteer teams to Moldova this year. Volunteers will provide:
- EMS Training
- Rehabilitation Therapy
- Burn Care and Training
- Work / Construction Assistance
One container of humanitarian aid will benefit 35 hospitals and other local organizations. The shipment will also provide necessary equipment and supplies for the EMS training program. Project funding will pay staff salaries, travel funds, disaster center supplies and equipment, textbooks and teaching materials.
